SDA design show

This has been a long time coming! We’ve teased it since the beginning of the year, and we’ve finally partnered with a really exciting group to make it happen (more on that a bit later!)

As a student interested in submitting something for the show, here’s what you gotta know:
-We want to emphasize hand-craft and old-school worksmanship, but feel free to submit any project you’ve made that embodies hard work. Sweat of our brow means the labour we put in to something to make it look perfect, so if your project matches that description please send it along.
-Submit one or two jpeg images of your project, as well as your name, project title, and 100-150 word description. For anyone who already sent a submission in… we still have it! Couldn’t hurt to resubmit just to make sure, though.
-You can send your submissions to submissions@thesda.ca
-All submissions due at Midnight on March 4th.

We’ll have all the concrete details about the show very soon, but this should give you enough to work on over reading week. As usual, ask any questions on facebook, by twitter, in person, or whatever.

Look forward to seeing your work!

IDS, Sweaty Brows, and more.

First, a delayed welcome-back to the designers who represented UofA design in Toronoto’s Interior Design Show. We have some sick photos that we’ll put on the flickr account pretty soon.

Also, what happened to Sweat of Our Brow? We’ve actually been in perpetual damage-control for it all year. We’re sorry to string you along, but we’ve been trying to get the best venue possible. The good news? We may have something good. Keep your ear to the ground.

Also a reminder that the next On Design show is just around the corner. Unfortunately ( or fortunately? Depends who you are!) it’s another sold-out show, so no more tickets are available. If you have tickets and you’ve had a change of heart, remember to let us know so we can give them to some needy designers.

Take care!

Seasons Greetings!

I like this. I’m biased, but I’ll just say that I really like the SDA. We’ve had some good parties, made some bad-ass busses for a charity, had two fantastic lecturers come in to share their sage design wisdom, had a nice little poster show, and made delicious waffles.

Next term, we’ve got the Sweat of Our Brow show, IDS, and more lectures. Want to get involved in any of that? Send us an email or ask one of the executives — our faces are on the about section of the website, so no excuses not recognizing us.

I’d also like to thank everyone that got involved with SDA projects or supported the SDA in any way. Each of you rock, and obviously it would be a pretty crummy group if you didn’t do what you do. If you didn’t get involved, don’t stress it; We all have our own stuff to deal with, but let me just say from personal experience that you won’t regret it!

See you next term!

Ho Ho Ho,
Matt

Less than a week til the next On Design!

We’re under one week away from Raymond’s On Design talk and we couldn’t be more excited. He’s shared little tidbits of it and it promises to be thought-provoking.

There are a few of things we wanted to mention:

  1. The event has sold out and there are a number of people on a waiting list for tickets. If, for some reason, you can’t go, or you bought two tickets and only need one; please let us know by sending us an email at web@thesda.ca so we can give someone your ticket. No judgements or anything.
  2. As you know, the event is free! That said, we are going to be doing a raffle that night which will help raise funds for the SDA to continue to put on events like this. Karma can be a great and rewarding thing, plus the prize bags we gave out at the Gabe Wong talk were amazing.
  3. Last but not least, we are so pleased to have The Royal Bison Craft & Art Fair as our sponsor and partner for this event. If you don’t know about them, you ought to. It is, hands-down, the best craft show in the city and happening November 26-27 at 8426-Gateway Blvd. Get all your Christmas shopping done, and also support local artists and designers by doing it at the Bison.

So that’s it. We’ll see you in a week!

Gezellig: Art Auction

Gezellig is the theme for this year’s art auction for the Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Design grad shows! Gezellig is a Dutch word that is untranslatable into English, however its essence is that of a place of warmth, an exclamation of belonging, and a feeling of togetherness. We hope the meaning of the word will translate into the feel of the event. No stiff art talk, just friends getting together near the end of term to share in the community of art at the UofA.

Sweat of Our Brow FAQ

Got some questions about how to tackle your Sweat of Our Brow project? We have answers

“So I’m not allowed to use a computer at all?”

What? No, you can use a computer if you want.

“How much can I use a computer?”

This will vary depending on the designer. Design is a mindful process, so the purpose of this show is to be considerate of how much computers impact your design. Try to surrender yourself a little to the unpredictability of handcraft; revel in imperfection, but use a computer to reign it all in if you need to.

“So I can use a printer? Does a bandsaw count as a machine? What if I silkscreen it? What if I sketch on the computer? I don’t have any process work!”

Just relax and have fun!

“To what extent should my submitted pieces  be made by my own hand?”

When we jury the submissions, we’ll give more props to designers that took the spirit of the exercise to heart.

“I tend to use handcraft in my sketches and sketch models. Can I submit that?”

Can you make it look good and considered? If so, that sounds right up our alley.

“I have this project from a class that would be perfect for this…”

Cool! We love perfect projects.

Hope you have fun! If you have any more questions, remember you can always get in touch with us by shooting an email to info@thesda.ca.

The SDA has put out the call to all students to contribute to Sweat of Our Brow, a show dedicated to the idea of craft in design. The above post is one student’s approach to craft and its use in design. Through the next few weeks, we will be posting more student work that celebrates the spirit of craft. If you would like to contribute to Sweat of Our Brow, click here for more details.

Erin Cochrane on Craft

The inspiration for my chair came when we were assigned a furniture project that had to tell a story. I began to think about my family, and my eastern Canadian heritage. I was curious to see if I could build a piece of furniture that reflected where I’m from. Both sides of my family have strong holds in the maritime provinces; more specifically, the Gaspe Coast of Quebec. Littered with small seaside towns that overlook the chilly ocean, places like Perce and Chandler, where my mother and father grew up were the primary inspirations.

Alexandra Descotes on Craft

One of the greatest things about craft is that you are putting a little bit of yourself in each project and if you love what you’re doing it’s guaranteed to reflect in your end result.

My idea for Creature Cards came from a personal tradition of making homemade greeting cards for my friends and family. I’ve made them for birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentines Day… and sometimes just because I’ve felt like it. The smile that would come across a person’s face when they’ve realized the card was made just for them made it totally worth it for me.

Dress to Hip-ress

The SDA and VASA join forces to say goodbye to summer the ironic way: with a hipster party! Friday at 8:00, Plato’s Pizza (next to Garneau). Get there before it’s cool.

We have the place to ourselves, so it’s a good chance to mingle and meet. Bring a friend (no bike gangs!), drink some Combat Juice, and play some games.
For directions to Plato’s, just click here.

Look on the facebook page and make sure all your design and fine art friends are invited. If not, correct the injustice.
