Dress to Hip-ress

The SDA and VASA join forces to say goodbye to summer the ironic way: with a hipster party! Friday at 8:00, Plato’s Pizza (next to Garneau). Get there before it’s cool.

We have the place to ourselves, so it’s a good chance to mingle and meet. Bring a friend (no bike gangs!), drink some Combat Juice, and play some games.
For directions to Plato’s, just click here.

Look on the facebook page and make sure all your design and fine art friends are invited. If not, correct the injustice.

The SDA and VASA

“Oh crap, I missed the meeting!”

And you thought the SDA would leave you high and dry? Eff that noise! Here’s what happened if you missed the meeting on September 15th (or if you’re just getting forgetful in your old age)

The executive team introduced themselves! My name is Matt, and these are all my fellow execs.

We also explained what the SDA is all about!

Of course, you’re already on the website and you can just click here and here to find that info. I have my own mushy-gushy take on what the SDA is.

“How do I get an SDA membership?”

We already gave you one! If you’re taking a design credit, you can consider yourself a member. If you have ideas about fundraising opportunities, hit up Iwona. Drop Davis a line if you want to volunteer.

We told you about a party!

It’s a party for hipsters, so dress like a hipster. If you’re already a hipster then forget that it’s a theme party and just come-as-you-are. We’ll get you more details (promise!) very soon, but for now the important details are: it’s at Plato’s Pizza at 8pm on Friday, September 23rd. We’ve also invite the Fine Arts folks; Be careful, they get rowdy after a few drinks.

AND THERE’S A SHOW!

No word on exactly when it’s going to be, but count on late November. That’s right around the corner, so start thinking about what you’d like to submit now. You can submit 3 things, and alumni can submit 1. The brief explains it all better than I could here. Remember that SDA shows are a chance to experiment, be creative, show Edmonton what you’ve got, and maybe even be featured in some media. It’s also good to think about how these might related to your IDS submissions.

And save the date!

October 13th at 7:30pm is the first On Design lecture!

If you have any questions about the SDA, e-mail Allison.

A note to new and returning design students

The first SDA show that I attended was back in 2009. It was an event called Noiseplay, and it’s cemented in my memory as a time of tremendous jealousy. The venue was filled with student work beyond my comprehension in terms of professionalism and quality, and here I was as a bystander with nothing to show. My heart sank as I thought: why can’t this be me?

Last year, I had the opportunity of not only joining fellow SDA members by showcasing my designs at two shows, but of joining the executive team. And now, I’m director. How did that happen? Truthfully, ‘director’ is probably a generous term for how I plan on continuing with the association, since I’m fortunate enough to share the opportunity with an executive team that has already proven itself to be more helpful, encouraging, and innovative than I would have thought possible.

But this isn’t a story about me or the executive team. This is a story about all of us design students working as hard as we can together to share ideas with each other and our community. Each year of the SDA has surpassed the year before it, and I see no reason for us to lose this momentum.

I’d also like to make a personal appeal:
Please don’t let the opportunity of involving yourself with the SDA slip by you. I know the daunting feeling of trying to approach any group, but I promise you that the SDA can offer you opportunities that you may never get again.

And, to be blunt, the SDA needs you more than you need it— without design students behind it, the group is absolutely nothing. The executive team is dedicated to making all communications as clear as possible, so hopefully getting involved will be easier than it ever has been.
