SDA Roles

Leadership Roles

Director

  • Delegates tasks to the executive committee and provides strategic direction for the year

  • Makes themselves available to face the public in representation of the SDA

  • Plans and directs executive meetings

  • Ensures everything is running smoothly and monitors smaller projects

Note: Must have been in the SDA for at least one year.

Vice Director

  • Provides support to the Director in all tasks needed

  • Supporting the team by being in the know of what is happening and being available to resolve any conflict or issues

  • Coordinate smaller projects including the delegation of tasks and coordination of members setting up mixers, events, planning ,etc.

  • Ensures everything is running smoothly and monitors smaller projects

Note: Must have been in the SDA for at least one year.

Grad Chairs

  • Coordinate the fundraising, planning, and organization of the annual BDes Grad Show

  • Facilitate the elections, roles, and activities of the Grad Committee

  • Act as a liaison between graduating ID & VCD Students and the Grad Committee

  • Work with the Department on organizing the event

Note: Possible credits for the position if you can find a supervisor.

Operation Roles

Treasurer

  • Creating budgets and managing expenditures accordingly

  • Coordinating reimbursement of expenses

  • Advising group spendings

  • Creating a year-end financial report compiling expenditures and revenue into a single document

External Liaison

  • Creating relationships between the SDA and other student groups/members of the greater design community

  • Researching and reaching out to local designers, inviting them to lecture their experience at the SDA’s monthly OnDesign Talks

  • Building the opportunity to cross-promote or seek sponsorships with other groups

  • Sending out annual sponsorship packages to secure external funding for the team

Event Designer

  • Working with the Project Manager to create and follow a timeline for Built

  • Organize the design, setup, management, and running of Built

  • Acquiring and managing volunteers at various events

  • Ensures everything is running smoothly and monitors smaller projects

Note: Not required, but preferred that you have been in the SDA for at least one year.

Project Manager

  • Working with the Event Designer to create and follow a timeline for Built

  • Delegating appropriate tasks to the team members to help with Built preparations

  • Acting as the main spokesperson for the SDA during Built along with the Director and Vice Director

  • Acting as the main point of contact for vendors and volunteers during Built

Note: Not required, but preferred that you have been in the SDA for at least one year.

Media Roles

Copywriter

  • Searching, writing and applying for grants

  • Writing all the meetings notes at executive meetings

  • Writing all public-facing copy and internal documentation in collaboration with the Director or appointed team member

  • Reviewing and editing any major group writing prior to release or publishing

Note: You must provide a sample of your writing to nominate yourself for this position.

Graphics Leads (2 positions)

  • Creating a new visual identity for the 2026–2027 team, and utilizing this for the rest of the school year

  • Creating all visual material for posters, documents, internal materials, and social media

  • Building the opportunity to cross promote or seek sponsorships with other groups

  • Sending out annual sponsorship packages to secure external funding for the team

Note: You must submit two portfolio pieces/examples of work to nominate yourself for this position.

Web Coordinator

  • Updating and promoting all SDA events on the website

  • Managing event media on the website

  • Regularly communicating with the Communications Officer and Copywriter to maintain consistency among social media platforms

  • Establishing one-self directed project each semester (details about the project may be discussed with the Director)

Communications officer

  • Manages online presence across all social media platforms

  • Responds as the first point of contact for incoming opportunities, forwarding them across networks

  • Takes on marketing and promotional role during Built operations

  • Directs photographers to produce photos and videos

Photographers (2 positions)

  • Working with other team members to photograph events held by the SDA

  • Photograph the new SDA team

  • Provide photographs as needed by the team, such as production photos for vendors during Built

  • Edit photographs as needed for various SDA-related media

Note: You must submit two photographs of your work to nominate yourself for this position. Preferably one headshot and one product photo.

Participation Roles

Membership Coordinator

  • Recruiting and coordinating volunteers for SDA events

  • Organizing class announcements about recruitment and events

  • Facilitate relations with the four Representatives to present ideas that will encourage involvement within the student body

Student Representatives

  • Making sure that students in respective programs are aware of various SDA activities that are happening on campus

  • Communicating any comments/concerns from the student body to the SDA executive team

  • Making class announcements and doing class visits to personally communicate SDA news to the student body

  • Providing support to the SDA team in all activities, while taking direction from the Membership Coordinator and Director
